abstract = "Reliable burned area and biomass burning emissions inventories are
important assimilation data in air quality numerical models.
Consequently, the objective of this study is to estimate the
amount of burned biomass derived from fire scars mapped and
validated in MODIS images for Rond{\^o}nia state between
2000-2011 years. The mapping was obtained by the use of Linear
Spectral Mixture Model (LSMM), segmentation of shadow fraction and
manual edition. The above ground biomass data was obtained in
shapefile format of Saatchi et al., (2009). The data were
resampled to the same spatial resolution of MODIS sensor and the
analysis of biomass burned was obtained from the cross-tabulation
in SPRING. The results indicates that burned areas occurs mainly
in forest extraction areas, cattle areas and permanent diversified
crops. In this context, in the 12 years studied, the fire caused
the loss of 2,074 Tg of biomass that was consumed by fires. Thus,
is very important improved data about the total burned area, as
well as, inventories of biomass consumed by fire as input data in
numerical models of air quality that will promote better
estimation of weather systems and provide more reliable estimates
of trace gases and aerosols that are released into the
                         atmosphere.",
